Master the composer
The composer is more than a text box. It decides which model answers, what context it sees, which tools it may use, and how your words get in — typed, formatted, or spoken.
A tour of the composer
Composer basics and controls
The basics: type normally, Shift+Enter for a line break, send with the arrow button or Enter. Everything else on this page is a control arranged around that flow — check model, search, memory, and tools before a long or tool-heavy run, and the run will go where you expect.
Writing and editing
The composer is a rich text box. It keeps the shape of what you write and of what you bring in from elsewhere, so a prompt assembled from a document, a web page, or a screenshot arrives at the model looking the way it did when you copied it.
| What you do | What happens |
|---|---|
| Press Enter | Sends the message. The send button menu switches this to Cmd+Enter if you write long, multi-line prompts. |
| Press Shift+Enter | Inserts a line break and never sends, on every keyboard including the on-screen keyboards of phones and tablets. |
| Paste from a document or a web page | Headings, bold and italic text, bulleted and numbered lists, links, and code blocks all survive the paste and stay editable. Pasted markdown source is offered as formatting you can accept or decline. The offer closes as soon as you edit, so accepting it never undoes a change made after the paste. |
| Paste a screenshot or an image | The image is attached to the message as a file chip, exactly as though you had picked it with the attach control. Several images in one paste all attach, and text copied alongside them still lands in the text. |
| Drag a file onto the conversation | The whole conversation becomes a drop target while you drag, and the file attaches on drop. Folders are accepted through the attach control. |
| Undo and redo | The usual Cmd+Z and Cmd+Shift+Z work inside the composer, including after a paste, a slash action, or a formatting change. Undo stays within the conversation you are in. |
| Switch to another conversation | What you typed stays with the conversation you typed it in. Every chat, topic, and thread keeps its own draft: the one you open shows its own draft or an empty composer, and your text is there again when you come back. Drafts are kept while the tab is open; reloading the page clears them, and deleting a conversation deletes its draft. |
| A send fails | If the composer is still empty, a message that is only words goes back into it so you can send it again. If you have typed since, your new text stays where it is, and the message that did not go out is shown above the composer with a Retry button until you retry it or close it. A message that has files in it, or is only files, waits above the composer with a Retry button whatever the composer holds, and Retry sends its files again with it. The one exception is a file that did not finish uploading: nothing was sent, and if the composer is empty the words and the file go back into it, so you can remove the file or retry the upload and send again. If you have typed since, the message waits above the composer with its Retry button and the file chips come back so you can fix the upload; once its Retry goes out, those chips leave the composer. If you leave a new chat before its first message is accepted, the message that did not go out waits in that chat when you open it, and the next new chat you start begins empty. |
| Send while a reply is written | Your message waits in a queue above the composer and goes out on its own when the reply ends, whether the reply finished, failed or you stopped it. Messages that wait together go out as one message. A message that is only files shows the names of its files in the queue. Remove a message from the queue to keep it from being sent, or press its edit button to take it back into the composer with its files: what you are typing stays, and the queued words follow it. Pressing Retry on a message that did not go out while a reply is written puts the retry in the queue the same way. Closing that message takes its retry out of the queue, and editing the queued retry moves the message into the composer instead of keeping it above it. |
| Click Stop while a reply is written | The reply stops. Whatever is in the composer stays there and is not sent, and messages waiting in the queue go out next, as they do when a reply finishes. If you stop a message before it was stored and it is only words, it goes back into the composer, or, if you have typed since, it is shown above the composer with a Retry button. A message that has files in it, or is only files, is always shown above the composer with a Retry button. |
| Write something long | The box grows with the text up to a fixed height, then scrolls on its own with the cursor kept in view. The expand control opens it full screen, where Enter inserts a line break and Cmd+Enter sends. |
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Model picker | Click the model badge to pick an Axelera AI model: Axelera Earth 1.0 for the deepest multi-step work (the default), Axelera Venus 1.0 for the best balance, Axelera Mercury 1.0 for the fastest answers, or a direct GPT, Claude, or Gemini model. The Axelera AI models know the Voyager SDK best. |
| Web search toggle | Lets the answer use live web results. Turn it off to keep Wingman's web search and page fetching out of a new answer; project knowledge can still be used. Where the model has its own built-in search, the control also chooses between Wingman web search and the model's native search. |
| Memory toggle | Controls whether this conversation can read and write your long-term memory. Turn it off for one-off or sensitive threads. |
| File upload | Attach files, paste images, or drop documents straight into the prompt. Each attachment stays visible as a file chip when its upload finishes, becomes context for this message, and can be removed before you send. |
| Formatting bar | Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, lists, task lists, quotes, TeX, inline code, and code blocks — for structured prompts and notes. |
| Model parameters (dev) | Per-chat temperature, top_p, presence and frequency penalty, max tokens, and history count, where the selected model exposes them. |
| Token indicator | Shows the model's context window, used and remaining tokens, and a breakdown of what is consuming context. Check it before attaching more files. |
| Credits button | A plain Credits button beside the composer; it shows no number while you work. Click it to open a card with the credits you can spend right now and a gauge beside them: the gauge is full when your credits are untouched and empties as you spend, measuring what is left against everything your account has had available this month, which is what is left plus what you have already spent, so it only ever falls as you spend and fills again when the month turns or a new grant arrives. The card then says how many of the credits this month put within reach you have used and how many are left, which of them are monthly credits and the date those renew, and any credits reserved by requests still finishing, which are already subtracted from the balance. One-off credits are named apart from that renewal because none of them renew: your welcome credits never expire, and the others last until their own expiry date. It also says whether the selected Axelera AI model answers at the everyday or the premium rate, and links to the Credits settings page, where every grant is listed in the order they are spent, each with the date it expires or a note that it never does. The button changes colour when a tenth of your credits or less is left, and again when the account is out. Everyday answers do not draw on the balance, within the fair-use ceiling described on that page. |
| Prompt transform | Rewrites the current draft with a clearer structure and a better tone before you send it. Draft rough, transform, send. If you keep editing while it works, your edits win and the rewrite is dropped. |

The send button menu
The send button hides a small menu. It switches whether Enter sends immediately or Cmd+Enter does (useful when you write multi-line prompts), and it can insert your text as a message without generating a reply — Alt+Enter does the same — which is handy for adding context or notes mid-conversation.
History, knowledge, and mentions
Two more things reach the composer from the keyboard rather than a button: Alt+Shift+Backspace clears the current messages, and Alt+N saves the conversation as a topic. Typing @ mentions an agent or topic as context. Availability varies by surface — if a control is missing, it is not enabled on the current agent or deployment.
