Hardware generations & product names
Axelera hardware comes in two AIPU generations, Metis and Europa, sold under the Embedded, Edge, and Server product names. This page maps every name to the chip inside it and shows how to read a name you have not seen before.
Generation and product
The generation is the chip. The product name is the card or board you hold. Wingman drives the Voyager SDK, and Axelera ships the Voyager SDK as the one software stack for both generations.
When a page in these docs says "your card", it means whichever of these products is in your machine.
Current products
| Product | Generation | Form factor | Chips | Optimized for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Axelera Embedded 110m | Metis | M.2 card | 1 | Efficient, low-power vision inference |
| Axelera Embedded 113m | Metis | M.2 card | 1 | Higher-performance workloads, including language and vision-language models |
| Axelera Embedded 111c | Metis | Compute board | 1 | A standalone single-board computer with an Arm host processor |
| Axelera Edge 130p | Metis | PCIe card, half-height, half-length | 1 | Edge systems and appliances |
| Axelera Edge 232p | Europa | PCIe card, half-height, half-length | 1 | Edge systems and appliances |
| Axelera Server 150p | Metis | PCIe card, full-height, full-length | 4 | Server deployments |
| Axelera Server 250p | Europa | PCIe card, full-height, full-length | 4 | Server deployments |
How to read a product name
An Axelera product name has three parts: the word Axelera, a descriptor, and a number with a letter. Axelera Embedded 113m reads as Metis generation, Embedded lane, performance tier 3, M.2 form factor.
| Part | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Descriptor | What the product is optimized for: Embedded for space-constrained designs, Edge for edge systems and appliances, Server for server deployments. |
| First digit | The silicon architecture. 1 is Metis, and each new architecture takes its own number. The two Europa products in the table above both start with 2. |
| Second digit | The optimization lane, which matches the descriptor. In the current range that is 1 for Embedded, 3 for Edge, and 5 for Server. |
| Third digit | Relative performance. |
| Letter | The form factor: m for M.2, p for PCIe, c for a compute board. |
Earlier names you will still meet
Older documentation, forum threads, and store listings use the names the Metis products had before: Metis PCIe card, Metis M.2 card, and Metis Compute Board. They are the same hardware as the Edge, Server, and Embedded products above, and the Embedded 111c product page still calls it the Metis Compute Board. When a source uses an earlier name, match it by generation, form factor, and chip count.
On Metis cards the tools speak in device terms. axdevice lists a card as a device such as metis-0-1-0, the device nodes live under /dev/metis-*, and the driver package is metis-dkms. Those identifiers are literal, so type them exactly as the pages show them. For another generation, take the device and driver names from your Voyager SDK release.
What the tutorials were recorded on
The tutorial videos and the sample output on these pages were recorded on Metis cards, which is why device lines read metis-0-1-0 and measured numbers belong to that hardware. Do not carry a core count, a frame rate, a memory limit, or a command flag from one generation to the other.
For a Europa card, follow the device checks and the compatibility matrix that your Voyager SDK release documents. The Wingman skills resolve the generation from the device and from your SDK release before they build, and they report a step they could not verify on your hardware as pending, so a package never claims a validation that did not run.
